Fan, is a mechanical device that functions to generate flow in a fluid, usually a gas. In the industrial world, fans are used to generate flow from gas or air in large quantities which are used according to the needs of the industry.

The fan consists of several parts, namely, the case , the blade ( vane / blade ), and the driving force. The vane / blade rotates to provide the desired airflow. In contrast to the function of the compressor which produces low- flow compressed air , the fan produces high- flow and low-pressure air.

In the industrial world, fans are used, among others, in the combustion process, HVAC systems, transport, refrigeration, air dryers, and so on. The following are examples of fan applications used in a Steam Power Plant industry:

1. Force Draft Fan (FD Fan) This

fan is used to produce high flow to meet the air needs in the coal burning process in the furnace . The amount of flow required depends on the amount of combustion and the water / fuel ratio set. When the combustion in the furnace must increase due to the increased need for electric load, the flow FD Fan will be largewill also adjust up. The opening size of the blade (blade pitch) can be adjusted using a hydraulic system, to adjust the required amount of air flow .

2. Induced Draft Fan (ID Fan)

ID Fan functions to regulate the amount of air pressure in the furnace , by regulating the amount of air flow from the furnace combustion (flue gas) that comes out to the chimney (chimney). The pitch blade can also be adjusted in size to adjust the flue gas flow .

3. Primary Air Fan (PA Fan)

PA Fan, which is one example of usecentrifugal fan , functions to transport powdered coal, from the pulveriser to the furnace . In addition, air from the PA Fan is also used to dry the coal, so the combustion process in the furnace is more efficient.

4. Ventilation System

As I explained in my previous article with the title HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) , fans are widely used in HVAC systems. For ventilation, circulating air conditioning ( Air Handling Unit , and exhaust fan .

As I mentioned above, there are 2 types of fans that are used, namely centrifugal fans and axial fans . Centrifugal fans use the principle of centrifugal force to produce air flow with higher pressure. While the axial fan using the principle of axial force to focus on generating flow air flow is great with a lower pressure.
